Microsoft’s i’m Initiative: Hotmail users can now give Microsoft’s money to good causes

You may have noticed some of your Messenger buddies with a little “i’m” icon next to their name in your buddy list. If you do, you’ll know that your friend is participating in the i’m Initiative and raising money for social causes. Here on the Hotmail team, most of our office signed up right away when the i’m Initiative launched in 2007 – we use Messenger so much to communicate at work that we figured we should put all of that typing to good use. Now, we’re going to have to sign up all of our Hotmail accounts!

What is the i’m Initiative?

The i’m Initiative is a Microsoft  program where Microsoft shares a portion of their advertising revenue for everyday activities – sending IMs and emails. Hotmail and Messenger have ads, like all free web services, and Microsoft makes money when a customer sees an ad. The i’m Initiative has successfully raised over 1.4 million dollars since it got started in 2007. It used to be available only in Windows Live Messenger, and now the Hotmail team is glad to say that you’ll be able to raise money for the cause of your choice each time you send an email.

How do I get started?

Go to http://im.live.com to join. You can choose to participate in Messenger, Hotmail, or both and you can pick a different organization for each service or dedicate all your efforts to one cause – it’s entirely up to you! This program is currently available only to customers in the United States. Once you’re set up, you’ll raise money for your favorite cause every time you send an email or IM. It’s really easy. Once you join, there’s no extra time out of your day, you don’t have to pay any money, and you get to know that you’re taking a step towards making the world better. The power of the collective can be huge – think of the difference that could happen if everyone swapped out a few plastic grocery bags each week for a reusable bag or took one less car trip a week.

Can I choose who gets Microsoft’s money?

You can choose to support any of the organizations on this list: the American Red Cross, Boys & Girls Clubs of America, the National AIDS Fund, National Multiple Sclerosis Society, ninemillion.org, Sierra Club, StopGlobalWarming.org, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, The Humane Society of the United States and U.S Fund for UNICEF.

Whenever I am looking at my hotmail messages, I get a message which says, the Internet explorer should be closed so that Live Messenger can continue the download. What the hell is this. There are 2 options given to me , close it down and let it download, or leave it open and reboot later. I mean why am I getting this nuisance message, I never asked for it.

The i'm Initiative is available to both US and UK customers for now. I don't know if the marketing team plans to expand the program to more markets in the future.

Yes, more improvements are coming to Windows Live Hotmail. We'll blog here about them when we're ready to make an announcement.

Is there a particular reason why this is available only to US customers? I wanted to sign up from the first time I heard about it but was surprised to know that its a US only thing for now. Whatever barrier keeps this initiative local to the US needs to be overcome. Something like this could have great potential as a globally united initiative, especially if the impact that the funds generated are making in the different organizations are publicized so people all over the world can see a difference being made and say, I was a part of that.

1we2q: At this time, the i'm Initiative is available only in Windows Live Hotmail and Windows Live Messenger. I don't know if the other teams plan to add it. I work on the Hotmail team.

NM Jeff: If you have a Live account, you should be able to login to Hotmail. If your account is based in the US or UK, you should be able to sign up for the i'm Initiative.

Abhijith: At this time, the i'm Initiative is available only in the US and UK. I don't know if the marketing team plans to make the feature available in other markets in the future. If it's a success in the US and UK, I'm guessing there would be some interest, but again, I'm on the Hotmail engineering team, so I'm not sure. At this point, the charities listed above are generally US-based, though some have global scope in terms of where they make their impact. Microsoft and the Gates Foundation make a variety of other charitable contributions to organizations based outside of the US.

John: I don't know if the Windows Live Mail (desktop) team plans to participate in the i'm Iniative.

Michael: Interesting suggestion. I'm on the engineering side, so I don't work on the marketing plans. I'd think that we'd want to give as much of the money to good causes rather than advertising firms, so we're trying word-of-mouth for now.

It would be great...if I could join Hotmail. I already have a Live account, and when I try to create a Hotmail account, it just keeps taking me in circle.
Fix that and I would totally use this!

Hi,
Its a great initiative....
I was just wondering, whether it is applicable for only US? I mean does MS support organizations outside US, say for ex India?

Will this feature be added to Windows Live Mail desktop?  Just asking because for me it is my preferred method for accessing my Windows Live (to include MSN) e-mail.

Yay! About time. I think MS should roll out some TV (not just web) ads showing how using Live Hotmail/Messenger really helps contribute to an organization you love. I love that you guys are doing this.

Unfortunately, not many people are ever in tune with what MS does with their online services, and the only way to get through is by making TV ads. Otherwise, people won't pay much attention if it's just another one of those web ads we tend to ignore. I'll be sure to get my Hotmail one.
